The 2018 Nissan Pathfinder is a premium crossover SUV with a family-centric design. The 2017 Honda Pilot is a crossover SUV that also caters to families with a preference for convenient amenities. Offering up to 284 hp and a 6,000-pound towing capacity, the Pathfinder is offers a more powerful performance than the Pilot. The Xtronic CVT and Intelligent 4x4 drive also give this Nissan model an advantage in all-terrain handling.

Powertrain

Carrying the patented Direct Injection Gasoline (DIG) stamp, the Nissan Pathfinder's 3.5 L V6 engine unleashes up to 284 horsepower. When the tachometer reaches at least 4,800 RPM, this engine produces 259 pound-feet of torque. Also having six-cylinders, the Honda Pilot's 3.5 L i-VTEC engine has a top output of 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. The Eco Assist System helps the powertrain achieve good fuel economy under normal driving conditions. In the Pathfinder, the Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS) optimizes power without sacrificing efficiency. Having a multi-port design, the direct fuel injection system essentially eliminates delays in combustion. Additionally, the Nissan Direct Ignition is paired with a variable induction system. Both crossover SUVs have reliable throttle systems with drive-by-wire mechanisms. Capable of towing up to 6,000 pounds, the Pathfinder is simply stronger than the Pilot, which has a maximum conventional towing rating of 5,000 pounds.

Handling

Inclement weather and rough terrains won't hinder the Nissan Pathfinder's Intelligent 4x4 drive system. You can turn a rotary dial to set this signature drivetrain to run on the 2WD, Auto or 4WD Lock mode. Available with the Intelligent Variable Torque Management, the Honda Pilot is also versatile enough to handle diverse landscapes and weather conditions. Additionally, the i-VTM4 system is linked to the Intelligent Traction Management that's optimized for snow, sand and mud. Both of these crossover SUVs have the Hill Start Assist that overcomes gravity on steep gradients. However, the Hill Descent Control makes the Pathfinder more suitable for navigating sloped landscapes and inclined roads. Equipped with the trademark Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission system, this versatile Nissan instantly shifts into the right gear ratio. The Pilot only offers an automatic transmission system with six or nine gear speeds.

Amenities

The Tri-Zone Automatic Temperature Control System is standard in the Nissan Pathfinder. In comparison, the Honda Pilot LX base trim doesn't have the Tri-Zone Automatic Climate Control System. Featuring heating and ventilation vents and a 120-volt power outlet, a central console lets the second-row passengers manually adjust temperature settings and charge electronic devices. The seats in the second row have the Latch and Glide technology that facilitates tilting, sliding and folding. Additionally, the third-row bench seat can be reclined to provide an extra level of comfort.
