One of the least expensive vehicles on the market, the Nissan Versa nonetheless attracts buyers of all ages. This is more than a stripped-down transport. The Versa comes with a surprisingly long list of standard and optional features, and while the tiny engine delivers underwhelming power, fuel efficiency is unbeatable.

Available in a total of three trims, the 2019 Nissan Versa offers buyers numerous choices of interior refinements. The huge cabin, larger than what is found on most other compacts, and the spacious trunk, capable of handling bulky boxes and grocery bags, are great selling points. It's easy to drive, and it can park where midsize sedans can't fit.

Performance

Car shoppers interested more in saving money on the purchase and at the fuel pump will definitely like what the 2019 Versa offers. The only engine available is a 1.6L four-cylinder power source that produces 109 horsepower. Needless to say, acceleration isn't something to write home about, but the 39 mpg on the highway certainly is. The base S trim comes with a five-speed manual transmission while the S Plus and SV versions employ a continuously variable transmission. All Versa trims are front-wheel drive. At arterial speeds, the Versa is rather quiet, and steering response is quite good. The ride is a bit springy, so bumps and dips in the road are soaked up with ease.

Interior

The 2019 Nissan Versa boasts a truly spacious cabin, something that is definitely not the case with most subcompacts. The rear seating area is a bit tight, but headroom isn't a problem even with six-foot tall passengers. Front visibility is excellent, and although the driver's seat doesn't have much adjustment range, any driver can find a position that allows for great outward visibility. Standard features on the base S trim include a 7-inch screen display, Bluetooth, a USB port, and a four-speaker sound system with an auxiliary input jack. The S Plus adds cruise control, and the SV trim comes with upgraded upholstery, power locks and windows, and a height-adjustable driver's seat. If the buyer springs for the available Special Edition package, the reward is a leather-wrapped steering wheel, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone app integration, and push-button start. All in all, the uplevel trims are certainly deserving of the modest price increase, but it's highly recommended that prospective buyers check out all three trims to decide what they absolutely can't do without.

Safety

This is an entry-level subcompact model, so don't expect too much in terms of advanced safety and security systems. That having been said, the 2019 Versa comes with antilock brakes, stability and traction control, four-wheel ABS, rear door child safety locks, dual front side-mounted airbags, front and rear head airbags, emergency brake assist, tire pressure monitoring, and a rear center 3-point seatbelt. There's also a front passenger occupancy airbag deactivation system. These features are standard across the trim lineup.
