The 2018 Maxima gets a few upgrades including Android Auto as standard across the trim lineup. Several safety features that were optional in the past are also now standard. Another bestselling model in this segment is the Toyota Avalon. It boasts a lengthy list of standard features on the base trim, but the uplevel version get really pricey. The Avalon focuses more on passenger comfort and interior design, and this hurts a bit when high-tech features are considered. Also, the Maxima offers an exciting SR sport version, and this also sets the model apart from the Avalon.

Performance

Every Maxima is equipped with:

  • • A 3.5L V6 engine rated at 300 horsepower
  • • Front-wheel drive
  • • A continuously variable transmission system

The engine response is terrific, and there's no hesitation from the CVT during acceleration. Steering is fluid, and the amount of feedback from the wheel is just perfect. The Maxima offers two driving modes, Normal and Sport. The simulated gear changes during acceleration give the driver a feeling of confidence. The 2018 Toyota Avalon is a big, roomy sedan, and it suffers a bit when the pedal is pushed to the floor because this model is powered by a smaller engine that produces only 268 horsepower.

Standard And Optional High-Tech

The base trim Maxima comes with:

  • • Keyless entry and ignition
  • • An eight-way power driver's seat and four-way power front-passenger seat
  • • An 8-inch screen display with navigation
  • • Two USB ports
  • • Satellite radio
  • • Standard rearview camera and forward collision warning with automatic braking

That's a lot of nice stuff for a base trim. The uplevel SV trim adds on front and rear parking sensors and power lumbar adjustment, and the ever-so-slightly more expensive SL comes with adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, and a 12-speaker Bose stereo system. The base model Avalon comes with a smaller screen display, the finicky Entune interface, and power front seats that have less adjustability than what is found inside the Maxima. The only area where the Avalon equals the Maxima is in standard safety equipment.

Sport Version

For something a bit more exciting, the 2018 Nissan Maxima can be purchased as a sport version, a model known as the SR. This trim is a bit similar to the SV trim but adds on:

  • • 19-inch wheels
  • • A sport-tuned suspension
  • • Column-mounted paddle shifters
  • • Active Ride Control
  • • Active Trace Control

The upgraded suspension is quite noticeable when drivers first take the SR version on a winding, bumpy road. The Active Ride Control system utilizes the brakes to soften bumps in the road, and the Active Trace Control adjusts the brake timing and pressure to keep the vehicle pointed straight forward. The 2018 Toyota Avalon doesn't come with a special sport version, and there's no sport-tuned package available.

The 2018 Nissan Maxima remains a solid buy, and it's priced smack in the middle of its segment even though it borders on a luxury model. Check out the various trims today at Pohanka Nissan of Fredericksburg!
