The 2018 Nissan Titan has been winning over consumers for years. Its recent upgrades have made it even more appealing and more capable. In this review, we'll see how it compares to rival, 2018 Toyota Tundra.

Curb Appeal

When Forbes Magazine did its own head-to-head with these two trucks, several things stood out about the Titan, and, in the end, they gave it the win. First it has a more kingly bearing, looking mightier than the Tundra, according to the Forbes test drivers. They like its more majestic and ferocious front end. These critics also noted that the Tundra has too much plastic inside. They liked the plush, well-appointed Titan better. Quality is wherever you look or touch. Nissan also offers the longest bumper-to-bumper warranty, giving the Titan owner up to two more years of coverage than the Tundra buyer.

The Titan comes with one powerful engine. This 5.7-liter engine earns 390 horsepower and 394 lb-ft of torque. It pulls way ahead of the Tundra’s standard 310-horsepower engine. In fact, if you compare the standard Tundra to the standard Titan, you’ll find the Nissan leads in towing capacity. Tundras are rated at 6,800 pounds vs. 9,400 pounds for the Titans. If you want more power in the Tundra, it has a 5.7-liter V8 which earns slightly less horsepower and slightly more torque than its Titan rival. This engine drops fuel economy to a dismal 15 mpg city and 18 mpg highway. Fortunately the Nissan Titan can do much better. As for handling issues, the Titan has a few tricks under its sheet metal. It is shorter and fits parking spaces better. Titans have a smaller turning radius, which is a good thing in parking lots, on the job, or out on the trail.

The Titan receives a 9.3 safety rating from the critics at U.S. News and World Report. Tundras have an 8.1 rating. Nissan offers some systems that other truck companies don’t. The first is an electric motor for its brake fluid. This system increases fluid pressure and ensures ample brake pedal force when the Titan driver slams on brakes. Nissan’s four-wheel drivetrain features a brake limited-slip differential, another feature only found on the Titan. Nissan has added an exclusive trailer light check system. This allows the Titan driver to be sure lights and turn signals are working without relying on a second person to check. In another exclusive, Nissan has moving object detection with its 360-degree camera system. If you have this aboard, you have electronic eyes to watch and warn you if someone or something wanders into the car’s perimeter.
